About GoBag :

The GoBag App serves as a platform for users to organize their emergency bag essentials. Premium plan subscribers benefit from personalized notifications alerting them when their items are nearing expiration or have expired. Additionally, GoBag offers exclusive app blogs to educate users on various disasters and emergency preparedness, fostering awareness and family evacuation planning.

Problem Statement

User Problems :

People with GoBags face difficulty managing expired items, as the infrequent use of the bag increases the likelihood of overlooking expirations, jeopardizing the kit's effectiveness during emergencies. There is a need for a solution to seamlessly track and notify users about expiring items in their GoBags.

Business Problem :

Since this is a partner project aimed to help people to be prepared for any emergencies, we needed to come up with a premium that is feasible enough to cover our design and development expenses

Target Audience :

Our solution caters to a diverse range of users, recognizing that emergencies encompass both natural disasters and man-made conflicts such as war, civil unrest, and riots. Our primary focus is on individuals who prioritize the safety of themselves and their families in the face of disasters. This includes families as well as single individuals who are conscientious about their preparedness and proactive in safeguarding themselves and their loved ones.

Initial Research illustrations

Initial Research :

Initial Research illustrations
We enquired users weather they have made a GoBag and what are their methods of tracking their items expiry date. Initial research shows that most users are not sure what to add in their GoBags. The other users manually add events or alerts to their calendar but they find it difficult since sometimes they are dealing with multiple items and they have multiple quantities of the same item and each of them have different expiry dates. The challenge increases when one family member has the responsibility of managing multiple GoBags.

User Personas

Based on this initial research, we created 2 main users, a family person and a single person.

Competitive Analysis :

We also did a comprehensive research on possible competitors on GoBag and haven’t found any viable competitors yet. We found 1 possible competitor but they’re still under development and under wraps, making further analysis not possible. Most users usually use their calendars to track the items but its not easy and less efficient.

Sitemap :

A site map was created to outline the user flow in the GoBag app, like creating a GoBag and features like the Near Expiry Dashboard, which highlights items nearing expiry or expired in the user's go bag

Wireframes :

Wireframes have been developed based on the site map to create the essential screens required in the app. These wireframes include main elements to understand the app's visual layout, from the home page to the items list displaying expiry dates, and the near expiry page, among others.

UI Designs :

In this phase, we worked on the UI colors, iconography and created a normal mode and dark mode for the users.

Style Guide :

We created a style guide including the color-palate, icons, fonts style and size to maintain a feel of consistency throughout the app for our users.

Initial User Testing and Updated Designs :

I conducted user interviews based on this static prototype and gained unique suggestions on the existing app and interesting features in this platform. Suggestions like notes, where did i keep this item in my GoBag. These are inputs users can add additional details and will be useful for users to refer to remind notes like where they have added the items and special instructions one might have for some particular items like medication.

The Dashboard was also revamped so that users can have a glance on the collective GoBag category icons and identify if items are near expiry or not.

We also added a unique feature where users can share their Gobags with 2 different purposes in mind. One is to share their GoBag items list so that their friends can refer to emergency items that differ based on locations. The second feature is to provide management and notifications access to other users, which will be useful for family members managing GoBags etc.

Premium plan :

We have had multiple plans in mind but initially we will provide expiry notifications to those who have the premium support plans and then see how the users are gonna respond to it, since this is a Minimal Viable Platform.

Learnings :

There were many other interesting ideas like disaster warning systems, storing copies of important documents digitally in a secure platform and providing offline maps support, a feature that will help users to evacuate to a fixed point if he is not at home or other areas etc. But most of these features require capital and will be decided once the GoBag app is live and the support is satisfactory.
